Floods hit Albania

Xinhua, January 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding, landslides and road closures in many parts of Albania, including the capital Tirana and its second largest port city of Vlora, the Albanian Daily News reported on Thursday.

More than 200 people were evacuated from their homes in the northwest municipality of Lezha, where emergency measures were imposed along parts of the Drini River.

The outskirts of the capital were also affected, and tens of thousands of families were evacuated.

Dozens of hectares of land were flooded in the country. Many highways and regional roads have also been temporarily blocked following landslides. A number of cattle were killed in the floods.

The Albanian army has deployed 180 soldiers, 20 vehicles and a helicopter to deal with the situation. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported so far.

Albanian Deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi said that the government has allocated 25 million U.S. dollars to local authorities to fund irrigation and drainage schemes, and that 30 or 40 cranes will be distributed to municipalities. Endi
