Over 7,000 South Sudanese refugees have been registered by authorities in Dungu Haut-Uele territory in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), an official told Xinhua on Tuesday.
The refugees have continued to arrive on Congolese territory due to inter-ethnic conflicts that have been witnessed in recent days on the other side of the border, said Edmond Lukakao, a local administrator who spoke to Xinhua on phone.
Lukakao expressed concern over the difficulties his officials were facing in taking care of the refugees.
At the moment, some NGOs and local associations are providing support to the refugees, the administrator revealed.
Last month, an official from the UN High Commission for Refugees in Geneva expressed concern over the condition of South Sudanese refugees in DR Congo, majority of whom are women and children that had walked for a long distance on foot. Endit
