Two Rwandan police peacekeepers killed in Haiti

Two Rwandan Police peacekeepers were Tuesday killed in Haiti, authorities in Kigali confirmed Thursday.

The deceased, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Lillian Mukansonera and Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Aimee Nyiramudakemwa, were shot and killed at their residence in Cap Haitien by unidentified assailants, according to Rwanda Police statement.

The duo served under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as Individual Police Officers (IPOs).

Rwanda National Police, MINISTAH and Haiti National Police have commenced joint investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and offenders involved, the statement issued by Rwanda Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Celestin Twahirwa said.

"The family and next of kin have been informed accordingly. The Rwanda National Police condoles with the families of the deceased," it said.

In a statement, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti, Sandra Honoré, deplored the double loss, and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

It said the bodies were discovered on Wednesday morning. Endit
