Indian troops kill 2 militants in Kashmir gunfight

Xinhua, December 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit were killed Thursday in an overnight gunfight with Indian troops and police in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight took place at village Gusoo in Pulwama district, some 40 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening we got information about presence of militants in Gusoo village here, following which we cordoned off the area and tried to conduct house to house searches," Tejinder Singh, a senior police official in Pulwama said.

"The militants tried to break off the cordon at around 1:00 a.m. (local time) during night by firing upon our contingent and in the ensuing gunfight, both of them were killed."

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region. Endit
