Tokyo stocks advance in early trading as major bourses close higher overnight

Tokyo stocks advanced in early trading Wednesday, as U.S. and European stocks closing higher overnight lifted the market mood here, on the last trading day of the year.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 100.68 points, or 0.53 percent, from Tuesday to 19,082.91, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange added 8.92 points, or 0.58 percent, at 1,552.31.

Early advancers comprised mining, pulp and paper, and iron and steel-linked stocks. Enditem
