Austria to beef up security measures for New Year's Eve in Vienna

Austria is to increase security measures here to make the New Year festival safe due to attack warnings.

After receiving unidentified intelligence which warned European capitals of the possibility of attacks before the coming new year, Austria added more armed police on city streets, most notably at some public transportation stations.

To ensure the safety of the New Year festival in the capital city, Austrian police decided to mobilize its forces not only in Vienna, but also in other Austrian federal states.

Over 200 police from the states of Niederosterreich, Burgenland and Steiermark are to come to Vienna to beef up security over the next few days.

Austrian police held meetings on Monday to discuss security measures between Christmas and New Year, local media reported on Monday.

On Saturday, Vienna police said it received the unidentified intelligence in the days before Christmas, which alerted it of possible shootings or bomb attacks in Europe. Endit
