Pakistani army chief visits Kabul

Xinhua, December 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif paid a one-day official visit to Afghanistan on Sunday, a local media reported.

TV channel Tolo said the Pakistani army chief would hold meetings with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and other Afghan leaders.

General Sharif's talks with Afghan leaders are expected to focus on the Afghan peace process, border management and security issues, Tolo said in a news bulletin.

Pakistan's military spokesman announced on Sunday morning the army chief's visit to Afghanistan.

Lt. General Asim Bajwa, the military spokesman, told Xinhua, "Both sides will exchange suggestions over the revival of the peace process and how to improve security along the border."

"Our quest would be that work for peace is a shared responsibility and everyone should play their role," said Bajwa who is expected to accompany the army chief during the trip.

The first ever face-on-face dialogue between the Taliban and the Afghan government was held in Pakistan in July but the its second round was postponed at the request of the Taliban leadership, citing uncertainty caused by the confirmation of the death of former leader Mullah Omar.

Just recently, Islamabad announced to help revive the stalled peace talks, possibly within two weeks. Enditem
