Kvirikashvili nominated as new Georgian PM

Xinhua, December 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Georgian vice premier Giorgi Kvirikashvili on Friday was nominated by the Georgian Dream ruling coalition as new prime minister following the surprise resignation of Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday.

"Consultations were ongoing yesterday within the parliamentary majority group. We have agreed to name Giorgi Kvirikashvili's candidacy for the prime minister's post," said Zviad Kvatchantiradze, the leader of the Georgian Dream parliamentary majority group.

Kvirikashvili has also been serving as foreign minister since early September, 2015. Before that, he was the economy minister.

He has spent most of his career in financial and banking sectors before assuming the post of economy minister in late October 2012. He was a parliament member in 1999-2004.

The parliament is expected to confirm Kvirikashvili and the new cabinet, which the PM-designate has yet to name, on Dec. 29.

Garibashvili on Wednesday announced his resignation without specifying the reason.

Under the Geogian Constitution, the ruling coalition will have to nominate a new prime minister within 7 days since his resignation.

The new prime minister will then name cabinet members who need to secure 76 votes among parliament members for approval. Enditem
