8 killed, 20 injured in road accident in central Pakistan

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least eight people were killed and 20 others injured when a passenger van hit into a bus on Thursday in Pakistan's central Jehanian town, local media reported.

Urdu TV channel Dunya said that the van carrying some 20 people collided with the passenger bus coming from opposite direction in the Jehanian town of Khanewal, a district located in the country's central Punjab province.

Police said that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident, but apparently over-speeding of the van driver seems to be the culprit.

The injured people have been shifted to a nearby hospital where at leat six of them are said to be in critical condition.

Road accidents frequently happen in Pakistan due to poorly maintained roads, violation of road safety rules and reckless driving.

Traffic police officials say that 90 percent accidents in the country are caused merely by human errors.

According to data compiled by the country's bureau of statistics, an average of 15 people died every day in traffic accidents in Pakistan from 2003 to 2014.

The record showed that over 60,000 people died in road accidents in the country during the period. Enditem
