The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution, welcoming an agreement between rival Libyan political factions to form a government of national unity.
The resolution, while welcoming the formation of the nine-member Presidency Council in Libya, also called on the Council to work to form a government within 30 days and to finalize security arrangements necessary for stabilizing Libya.
The UN-brokered agreement was signed on Thursday in Morocco by Libyan rival parliaments, an internationally-recognized one in Tubruk and a self-proclaimed one in Tripoli, alongside representatives of Libyan political parties, municipalities and civil society groups.
According to the agreement, the participants in the Libyan dialogue will form a unity government in order to put an end to the violence and political chaos in the country.
The resolution also endorsed the Rome Communique, a document that has pledged support for a government of national unity as the sole legitimate government of Libya.
Libya has been suffering a political crisis with two rival parliaments and governments battling for legitimacy amid a state of insecurity and anarchy years after the downfall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The United Nations has sponsored dialogue sessions between the Libyan rivals since September 2014, in and outside Libya, in order to end the country's political division. Enditem
