Lithuanian FinMin proposed as candidate to EU Court of Auditors

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Lithuanian government on Wednesday put forward Rimantas Sadzius, the country's finance minister, as a candidate for the European Court of Auditors, the watchdog of the European Union's (EU) finances.

The government applied the Seimas, Lithuanian parliament, to approve Sadzius' candidacy, according to a bill from the government's office.

The office said Sadzius' candidacy had already been approved by the country's president.

Although the government applied the Seimas to discuss Sadzius' candidacy under the urgent procedure, the parliament decided to make the final vote in its spring session starting March 10.

The tenure of Lithuania's current representative in the European Court of Auditors ends next May.

The government hasn't considered who would manage the country's finances in Sadzius' stead for the remaining few months of the current government's term.

Sadzius, 55, a member of the Social Democratic Party, has been finance minister since 2012. He also worked as the deputy minister of social security and labor, the deputy minister of health, and the deputy minister of finance from 2003 to 2007.

The Luxembourg-based European Court of Auditors works as the EU's independent external auditor. The court is composed of one member from each of the 28 EU member states. Endit
