Australia deports French man found with "prohibited goods" after Paris attacks

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

A French national who tried to enter Australia with "prohibited goods" just two days after the Paris terror attacks was intercepted and deported by border protection officers, Australia's attorney-general has confirmed on Wednesday.

George Brandis said that Australia's Border Force (AFB) has stepped up screening on passengers coming in from Europe since the attacks, and since the man was detained trying to bring in three cans of mace and extremist material.

Brandis told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the man was deported once questioned.

"There was an intervention by Australian Border Force (ABF), including its counter-terrorism unit," Brandis said on Wednesday.

"He was found to be in possession of prohibited goods, namely three cans of mace.

"His visa was revoked and he was held in detention and deported from Australia."

Brandis said authorities were specifically targeting travelers from France and Belgium as part of the crackdown, while Australia's terror threat level remains at "probable" despite the new measures.

He added that anyone who posed a threat to Australia's security would be stopped at its borders. Endit
