Four rebels and two security force members were killed when Taliban militants attacked security checkpoints in Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar Monday night, police said on Tuesday.
"Several armed militants attacked joint security checkpoints in Marawara district at midnight. The security forces pushed back the attack, killing four attackers," a provincial police source told Xinhua.
One army soldier and an Afghan Local Police (ALP) member were also killed, with one ALP personnel wounded in the clashes in the district bordering Pakistan, he said.
The government established the ALP, or community police, in 2010 to protect villages and districts around the country where army and police have limited presence.
The Taliban has intensified attacks over the past months as the militant group tries to take territory and consolidate its positions ahead of winter in the country. Enditem
