Former NBA star center Yao Ming said he is honored to be named as a NBA Hall of Fame nominee.

"I am overwhelmed by this special favor, because the Hall of Fame is the place that so many great players whom I respect have been inducted into," he said.

"I am honored to get involved in basketball, a great sport that so many people love, care and watch. Thanks to tremendous support and sound suggestions from the fans, I can keep a good mentality and hopefully I will continue to make my contribution to the sport," he added.

The 2.29-meter Yao, who had been selected by the Houston Rockets as the No. 1 draft pick in 2002, averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.9 dunks and 1.6 assists for Houston from 2002 to 2011.
