Atletico waste chance, Real score 10, Barca on world top

Xinhua, December 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

On the day that FC Barcelona were crowned World Club Champions after beating River Plate 3-0 in Japan on Sunday thanks to a goal from Leo Messi and two from Luis Suarez, Atletico Madrid missed a great chance to go top of the BBVA Primera Liga when they were beaten 1-0 in Malaga.

A win would have seen Diego Simeone's side overtake Barca in first place, all be it with an extra game played, but it was not Atletico's night.

They looked sluggish in front of goal, with Fernando Torres especially disappointing, and were reduced to 10 men when Gabi Fernandez was sent off for two yellow cards 10 minutes after the break.

Charles scored the only goal of the game four minutes from time to give Malaga their second win in two games.

Meanwhile Real Madrid took advantage of the fact that rivals Rayo Vallecano were reduced to just nine men by referee Iglesias Villanueva with over an hour left to play, to score 10 goals past their rivals, who had been leading 2-1 before captain Tito and central defender was sent off .

Real Madrid took the lead from the penalty spot after Baena was sent off for a debatable penalty decision and from then on it was a matter of how many they would score against a side condemned to leave spaces all over the part.

Gareth Bale ended up with four goals, while Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick, Ronaldo two and Danilo one in a win which nevertheless says very little about Real's current form following last weekend's defeat in Villarreal.

Sunday's other games saw goals from Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams give Athletic Club Bilbao a straightforward 2-0 win at home to bottom of the table Levante, while Villarreal built on their win against Real Madrid last weekend by defeating Real Sociedad 2-0 away from home thanks to two goals from talented playmaker Denis Suarez.

Celta Vigo meanwhile remain fourth as they overcame the loss of striker Nolito to win 2-0 away to Granada with first half goals from Fabio Orellana and Iago Aspes.

On Saturday defensive lapses meant Gary Neville is still searching for his first league win as Valencia coach as his side were held to a 2-2 draw in the Mestalla Stadium against lowly Getafe on Saturday afternoon.

The result allows Valencia to maintain their unbeaten home record for 2015 and all of the goals came in the first 35 minutes as Valencia twice came back from behind after Pablo Sarabia and Angel Lafita had put Getafe ahead.

Their goals were cancelled out by Paco Alcacer and Santi Mina, who had only just got into the game as an early substitute.

Lucas Perez set a club record of scoring in seven consecutive matches as Deportivo la Coruna continued their excellent season with a 2-0 win at home to Eibar with Alejandro Arribas netting the second.

The Seville derby between Betis and Sevilla was not one for the purists, but a frantic 90 minutes which produced 12 yellow cards was entertaining in its own way as both sides used any means fair or foul to try and get a result.

Felipe Caicedo's fifth league goal of the campaign gave Constantin Galca a win on his league debut as Espanyol coach as the Barcelona based outfit defeated Las Palmas 1-0 with an improved display following a dull first half.  Endi
