Stable development of Macao benefited from support of central gov't: chief executive

Stable development of Macao has been benefited from for the policy support from central government, Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Chui Sai On said here on Sunday.

Chui made the remarks at a cocktail reception celebrating the 16th anniversary of the establishment of Macao SAR and its return to the motherland.

Based on the principle of "one country, two systems," the bulwark of the Basic Law, Macao has enjoyed continuous economic and social progress over the past 16 years with the full support of the central government, and the efforts of the whole community, said Chui.

Chui took central government's new action which adjusts Macao's land demarcation and clarifies maritime zones as a major support for the SAR government to break through its bottleneck. The change will help Macao diversify local economy, strengthen regional cooperation, improve people's livelihood and well-being.

Macao SAR government is conducting relevant deployment with scientific investigations and planing to efficiently administer the maritime zone by law and ensure enduring prosperity of the region, he said.

The proposal of 13th five-year plan stating to lift Macao's role in the country's development and opening up gave a direction of guidelines for Macao, Chui noted, adding that Macao is working out its plan to speed up the establishment of the world's tourism and leisure center to integrate into the overall program of the nation.

Chui stressed that upholding the ideal of working and sharing together, the government will endeavor to help nurture the emerging industry, help the youth and reinforce the welfare project.

A flag-raising ceremony was held at the landmark Lotus Square on Sunday morning with attendance of hundreds of people.

Macao Post is offering a commemorative postmarking service for the public to celebrate the 16th anniversary of Macao's return to motherland.

A series of activities including a concert and fireworks display will be staged later in the day. Endit
