Narcotics hidden in coffee table from Hong Kong: New Zealand customs

Xinhua, December 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

A coffee table from Hong Kong turned out to contain about 9 million NZ dollars worth of illegal drugs when it was inspected at the New Zealand border, customs officials said Friday.

Customs officers found more than 9 kilograms of methamphetamine in 15 packets hidden inside the coffee table, which was bound for a Wellington address, sparking a joint investigation with the New Zealand Police.

No arrests had yet been made in the investigation, but a large consignment of methamphetamine had been stopped from making its way on to New Zealand streets, customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien said in a statement.

"The drugs were carefully concealed to try and avoid detection, but our officers are vigilant. Customs has good risk assessment systems and significant seizures continue to be made," said O'Brien.

"We will continue to work closely with our international partners to disrupt the international drug supply chain, identify persons involved in this activity and protect our borders." Enditem
