King Abdullah II of Jordan launched the country's first wind power plant with total capacity of 117 megawatts, the state-run Petra news agency reported on Thursday.
The wind farm in Tafileh, 180 km southwest of the capital Amman, is expected to produce around 400 gigawatt hours per year.
This project is part of the country's energy strategy that seeks to increase reliance renewable energy contribution to 10 percent by 2020.
Jordan's minister of energy said the project will play a key role in supplying the national grid with electricity and meeting the rising demand on electricity in Jordan.
The minister added that several projects will be implemented soon in the field of wind and solar energy in different areas of the country. Enditem
