Quartet gives no initiative to stop violence: Palestinian official

Xinhua, December 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian official said on Thursday that the delegation of the International Quartet for Mideast Peace didn't propose any initiative to calm in the Palestinian territories.

Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the executive committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, said the delegation, consisted of representatives from the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations, confirmed its commitments to the Palestinians, including establishing the Palestinian state on the 1967 border.

Erekat added that the Palestinian leadership demanded the need to put a limit to Israel's daily measures against the Palestinian people, including assassinations, house demolitions, and checkpoints in different areas in the West Bank.

He added that the time has come to prosecute Israel for its "crimes against the Palestinian people," stressing that Israel chose the security solution as a way to fight Palestinians.

He hopes the Quartet and the international community could put mechanisms to hold Israel accountable for destroying the two state solution and continuing to besiege Gaza.

A Quartet delegation arrived in Israel on Wednesday and met with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. The delegation discussed ways to push the Middle East peace process forward and end violence and incitement, according to the Israeli public radio.

The radio quoted an Israeli diplomatic source as saying that Israel believes the international quartet is very important as an official party that encourages "moderation."

The delegation's visit was rescheduled twice in the past two months as per Israel's request partly due to the continuous tension between the Palestinians and Israel. Endit
