EU provides new support for Armenian reform efforts

Xinhua, December 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission on Wednesday announced a new support program of 30 million euros (32.8 million U.S. dollars) to enhance reform efforts in EU's eastern neighbor country Armenia.

The fund will go to the areas of quality employment, fiscal governance and civil society participation in the democratic decision making process.

"This renewed support to our eastern neighbor will allow crucial reforms to take place. This is good news for Armenian citizens as these reforms, be it through better public services or increased job opportunities, will benefit them directly," said Commissioner for European neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations Johannes Hahn when announcing the package.

While Armenia's economy has been growing over the past decade, the country has been exposed to external economic weaknesses.

In this context, the EU supports Armenia's development efforts aimed at strengthening employment opportunities, developing the country's human capital, improving social protection, and strengthening the public administration, rule of law, and governance systems. Endit
