Death toll of Syria's al-Hasakah bombings rises to 22

Xinhua, December 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The death toll of the triple bombings that rocked a northeastern Syrian town on Thursday rose to 22, a monitor group reported Friday.

The bombings were caused by three booby-trapped vehicles that tore through the predominantly-Assyrian town of Tal Tamir in the western countryside of Syria's northeastern province of al-Hasakah, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Following the explosions, the UK-based watchdog group said, the town has witnessed a state of alarm.

No party has claimed responsibility for the bombings, but the attacks bore the hallmark of the Islamic State (IS), which previously attacked Tal Tamir and committed atrocities last February.

The Kurds are in control of the majority of northern al-Hasakah and the borderline with Turkey, while the IS terror group control the city of Shadadi and its villages south of al-Hasakah and areas in the eastern and western countryside of that province.

Kurdish activists said the three explosions went off in swift succession, adding that the first blast targeted the Falastine Street, while the second and the third targeted positions of the Kurdish security forces, known as Assayesh, and the main Kurdish fighter group, known as the People's Protection Units, or YPG.
