The NBA Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes died for cancer at 87 on Thursday, according to the NBA's official website.

Schayes was diagnosed with terminal cancer six months ago and died after being stricken with a severe inflection, his son Danny Schayes said.

AS a 12-time NBA All-Star, Schayes played 16 seasons for the Syracuse Nationals, leading the team to their only championship in 1955.

In 1963, Schayes moved with the team to Philadelphia as a player-coach, retiring as a player at the end of the season as the NBA's then all-time leading scorer with 19,249 career points.

In his NBA career, Schayes averaged 18.5 points and 12.1 rebounds per game in 996 regular-season contests. He was recognized as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996.  Endi
