Brunei makes 600 drug-linked arrests in 2015

Xinhua, December 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brunei has made 600 arrests in connection with drugs so far this year, Borneo Bulletin quoted a top official from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)as reporting on Wednesday.

More than half of those arrested each year are above 31 years old, Osmawi bin Haji Osman, assistant director of the Preventative Drug Education Division, said on the sidelines of a NCB-organized roadshow at The Mall in Gadong.

The five-day roadshow aims to raise awareness on drug abuse in the country.

The previous roadshow focused on educating mothers on drug abuse in hopes that they would pass on the knowledge to their children, the assistant director said.

The NCB also provides rehabilitation for drug abusers at Al-Islah, a residential center based in Tutong. The rehab period depends on the nature and gravity of the offence with the maximum being three years.

According to NCB, the most prevalent drugs used in the country are methamphetamine and marijuana. Research has shown that the major factors that propel individuals to experiment with such substances are peer pressure, family background and lack of drug education. Enditem
