Xinhua, December 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 11 people were killed and some 20 others wounded on Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack at a Shiite mosque in the eastern part of the Iraqi capital, a police source said.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest around noon at the entrance of Ahlu al-Baiyt mosque, in Baghdad's al-Obeidi district, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The toll could rise further as ambulances and other emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, the source said.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. In 2014 alone, at least 12,282 civilians were killed and 23,126 others injured, making it the deadliest year since the 2006-2007 sectarian violence, according to a recent United Nations report. Endit
