President to start consultations on Latvia's next coalition gov't Thursday

Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis intends to start consultations with political parties on Latvia's next coalition government this Thursday after Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma announced her resignation earlier on Monday.

Vejonis will be meeting with representatives of the political parties in Latvia' s current parliament, his agenda shows.

Meetings with representatives of the left-wing Harmony, center-right Unity and the centrist Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) are scheduled for Thursday and talks with the rightist National Alliance, Latvian Bloc of Regions (LRA) and For Latvia from the Heart (NSL) will follow on Friday.

Vejonis also planned to make a statement after finishing the consultations on Friday.

Prime Minister Straujuma announced her resignation after an unscheduled meeting with President Raimonds Vejonis on Monday morning. The premier decided to stand down after last weekend's congress of her Unity party.

Her decision means that the Staujuma-led government is also stepping down. Endit
