British PM to outline gov't progress since election victory

Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

British Prime Minister David Cameron will make a keynote speech Monday to outline his government's progress in delivering on its manifesto commitments since the general election in May.

Cameron will also announce plans for the expansion of shared ownership of housing, free hours of childcare and more apprenticeships, Downing Street in a statement.

"The prime minister will today deliver a speech on how the government is getting on with the job and delivering on its manifesto commitments to provide real security and opportunity at every stage of life," it noted.

The speech, to be delivered seven months after the election, will set out how the government is pressing ahead with its major commitments.

They include the delivery of free childcare, three million new apprenticeships, a crackdown on coasting schools (poorly performing schools) and affordable homes to unlock home ownership to hundreds of thousands, according to Downing Street.

"A manifesto shouldn't be a wish list, it should be a checklist. And that's why, since the election, we haven't been taking off in a new direction, but marking off the commitments we made," Cameron is expected to say.

"Today, I want to set out the progress we're making. I want to go back to that opening page and show that this is a government that delivers and is accountable as it endeavors to do so," he will say.

Cameron formed his first all-Conservative cabinet after his party stormed to victory in this year's general election in May. Endit
