Constitution amendment to be finalized during Lao parliamentary meeting

The Lao National Assembly aimed to approve the draft amendment to the national constitution at its ordinary session which opened Monday in Laos' capital Vientiane.

This is the second time amendment is to be made to the country's constitution since the first amendment took place in 2003.

The constitution of the Lao People's Democratic Republic constitution was promulgated in 1991.

According to the National Assembly's Law Committee Chairman Daovone Vangvichit, the role of the National Assembly as the highest state power holder has been retained in the draft.

In Laos, the National Assembly takes the role of overseeing government and administrative bodies, while the Lao Front for National Construction oversees the National Assembly.

Other changes in the constitution include the rights to reshuffle and dissolve the Supreme People's Court, the Office of Supreme People's Prosecutor, and the State Audit Organization, in addition to appointing their deputy chiefs.

Amendments are also to be made on rights related to land and natural resources, among others. Enditem
