UN chief condemns Boko Haram attack on island in Lake Chad

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday condemned the triple suicide attack by Nigerian Islamic sect Boko Haram on the island of Koulfoua on the Chadian side of Lake Chad.

On Saturday, four suicide bombers attacked Koulfoua, killing themselves and 19 innocent people, and injuring 130 others.

"These despicable acts demonstrate yet again the brutality of Boko Haram," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

Ban also reiterated his call on the countries affected by Boko Haram to address the root causes of this scourge in a holistic and integrated manner, said the statement.

The Lake Chad Region is a site of regular attacks staged by terrorists of Boko Haram. These frequent attacks prompted the Chadian government to announce a state of emergency in the Lake Chad Region bordering Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.

On Nov. 18, Chad's National Assembly extended the state of emergency for a period of four months. Endit
