Nineteen killed in suicide bomb attacks in Chad: government

Xinhua, December 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

A series suicide bomb attacks carried out by Nigerian Islamic sect Boko Haram on Saturday have left 19 innocent people killed and 130 others wounded in the Lake Chad Region, the Chadian government said Saturday night.

"For now, the situation is under control," Chadian Communication Minister and government spokesperson Hassan Sylla Bakari said in a statement, calling for vigilance for any further terrorist act.

He said the government has instructed the health minister and a medical team to go to the site and help treat the wounded people.

According to the government, four suicide bombers attacked Koulfoua, an island in the Lake Chad Region, killing themselves and 19 innocent people. Earlier reports said 30 people were killed.

The Lake Chad Region is a site of regular attacks staged by terrorists of Boko Haram. The terrorists launched suicide bomb attacks on Baga Sola city in the region on Oct. 10, leaving 41 people killed and 48 others injured. The five bombers were among the dead.

These frequent attacks prompted the Chadian government to announce a state of emergency on Nov. 9 in the Lake Chad Region bordering Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. A law passed by the National Assembly on Nov. 18 extended the state of emergency for a period of four months. Endi
