Bombs, guns seized in Istanbul, U.S. consulate issues threat warning

Xinhua, December 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

A large amount of weapons and bombs were seized in a stolen car in Istanbul on Saturday, as the U.S. consulate issued a warning of "an imminent security threat."

Two Kalashnikov rifles, two Glock pistols, two grenades, six spare magazines and a snow mask with large amounts of bullets were found in the stolen car, Turkish media reported.

Counter-terrorism units have been deployed and police have launched an investigation.

Earlier this week, at least one person was killed and some others wounded in an explosion near an Istanbul metro station in rush hours.

Meanwhile, the U.S. general consulate in Istanbul warned on Saturday of "an imminent security threat" against the consulate compound," advising all Americans against reaching the facilities.

The U.S. State Department has strongly encouraged U.S. citizens to "maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster your personal security."

In August, two armed women opened fire at the consulate building, weeks after Ankara launched a crackdown on the Islamic State group. Endit
