An exhibition of 237 exceptional objects and treasures from the British Museum opened to the public at the National Museum of Singapore on Saturday.

This is the first time that collections of the British Museum have been presented as a comprehensive exhibition in Southeast Asia.

The exhibition showcases the personal collections by Sir Stamford Raffles when he was in Southeast Asia and many precious artefacts, including paintings from Cave 17 of China's Dunhuang, two 11th-century chess pieces discovered on the Hebridean Island of Lewis off the northwest coast of Scotland, and an exquisitely painted mummy board from ancient Egypt.

The oldest object in the exhibition is a stone handaxe from Tanzania made around 800,000 years ago, while the most recent artefact dates to 2013.

The exhibition will last till May 29, 2016, during which visitors can also enjoy public programs such as workshops, curated tours, and lectures by representatives from the British Museum and other historians, as well as theater performances in the gallery. Enditem
