Second hand cars bring air pollution in Macedonia

Xinhua, December 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pollution in Macedonia mainly caused by the emissions of second hand imported vehicles followed by industrial buildings and firewood, said the analysis of the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce, Macedonian media reported on Friday.

CEO of Macedonian Chamber of Commerce Mitko Aleksov stated that "Those vehicles do not have the necessary filters and catalyzers, so they emit an immense amount of harmful particles in the air. EU legislation allows an average daily emission of 50 micro-grams on a cube meter, and our country has around 10-20 times more."

Aleksov underlined that old vehicles do not fulfill the norms as declared by the EU, and increase the emission of PM-particles.

"A great number of these vehicles, especially in the past 5 years, have been imported in the country and exactly in the period when air pollution has been increased significantly," added Aleksov.

Referring to the data offered by the Macedonian Customs Administration, a total of 191,639 second hand vehicles were imported in the period from 2010 to 2015.

The Chamber suggests taking cautious measures, including an immediate implementation of Euro 4 Standard on second hand vehicle import, CO2 policy upon import and registration etc. Endit
