Cup error to highten tension in Bernabeu in matchday 14

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

It goes from bad to worse for Real Madrid as yet another setback confronts the club on the eve of the 14th round of matches in the BBVA Primera Liga.

The decision to start with the suspended Denis Cheryshev in the King's Cup against Cadiz on Wednesday almost certainly means the club will be eliminated from the competition and will only serve to put more tension in the air ahead of Saturday's home game against Getafe in the BBVA Primera Liga.

This is the first home match following the 4-0 drubbing at home to FC Barcelona a fortnight ago and although Rafael Benitez's side have won their three games since then, they have hardly convinced.

To add to Benitez's problems he has no substitute defenders for the game with Sergio Ramos, Rafael Varene, Dani Carvajal and Marcelo all injured for a game his side need to win in order to keep in touch with league leaders FC Barcelona.

Barca will test the waters in the Mestalla Stadium after Valencia replaced coach Nuno Espiritu Santo with Gary Neville after last week's defeat to Sevilla. Neville will watch from the stands as Voro and his younger brother, Phil, who was already at the club, direct Valencia.

Barca will be without Jeremy Mathieu through injury, but Sergi Roberto should have recovered from the knock which sidelined him last week.

If Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar maintain their form of recent weeks, Gary Neville will learn just how much work he has to do to take Valencia into the top-four.

Atletico Madrid are second in the table and will have to work hard to win away to a Granada side that also knows how to play ugly. Atletico have won recent league games by the narrow margin of 1-0 and a similar result could well be on the cards, despite the loss of midfielder Tiago through injury.

Fifth placed Deportivo la Coruna face a tough task at home to Sevilla, who need to start collecting points in the league, while Saturday ends with fourth placed Celta visiting a Betis side who can't stop winning away, but who struggle to convince in front of their home fans.

Sunday kicks off with a Basque derby between Real Sociedad, who a fortnight ago won their first home game of the season, at home to Eibar, who are one of the surprise packages of the season and battling for a place in Europe.

One point from their last two games has put the brake on Villarreal's season and they will have to improve against a Rayo Vallecano side who will look to attack while always giving options for their rivals to create chances.

Athletic Club Bilbao could move into the top six if they are able to beat a Malaga side that is struggling with an internal crisis, while Sporting Gijon need to end a three game run of defeats when they take on fellow strugglers Las Palmas.

The round of matches end on Monday when Espanyol entertain Levante. Endi
