5 terrorist suspects arrested before presidential election in Burkina Faso

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Security source of Burkina Faso said on Wednesday that five terrorist suspects were arrested ahead of the Nov. 29presidential and general elections.

The suspects, who speak Arabic, Djerma and Hausa local languages, were taken into custody on Nov. 28, claiming to try to bring blessings to the Muslim followers, the source told Xinhua.

Police said they found 2.05 million CFA Francs (3,303 U.S. dollars) following searches conducted at the suspects' residences.

Investigations have established links between the individuals and Burkina Faso's officials, including several customs inspectors and a former Member of Parliament, the source said.

In another development, unidentified gunmen attacked a convoy of vehicles transporting gold two days before the polling day. The vehicles belong to a mining company operating in Inata in northern Burkina Faso.

Presidential and general elections were held to end a one-year transitional government in a bid to restore democratic order and to provide the West African country with new legitimate authorities.

Roch Marc Christian Kabore of the People's Movement for Progress has won the presidential elections with 53.43 percent of the votes cast, equivalent to 1,668,169 votes, the National Independent Electoral Commission announced Monday night. Endi
