China hands out hefty fine for Marbury's former club (updated)

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) handed out the heaviest fine of the season to Shanxi, a former club of NBA star Stephon Marbury.

Shanxi was fined 170,000 yuan (26,500 U.S. dollars) for its alleged role in stoking crowd trouble during a Nov. 29 CBA league match with three-time champion Beijing, which has been spearheaded by Marbury for five seasons.

Marbury, the highest-profile player to join the Chinese league, had also played for Guangdong Foshan after parting ways with Shanxi.

The CBA also slapped a 40,000 yuan (6,300 US dollars) fine on Beijing for "responding with verbal abuse".

Beijing's substitute Yin Tianren and one of Marbury's personal trainers were suspended one game for "yelling obscenities back to the crowd and rival players."

Last time the two sides lost cool was in a 2012 semifinal game in Shanxi, which was interrupted after fans threw water bottles and other debris onto the court during the final minutes. Endi
