Albania to increase investment in agriculture in 2016

Xinhua, December 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Albanian government is increasing its budgetary funds for agriculture in 2016, one of the most important sectors of the country's economy, Albanian Daily News reported on Wednesday.

In the draft budget for 2016, the Albanian government plans to invest 10.5 billion lek (84 million U.S. dollars) in the agricultural sector, up 24 percent from the budget of 2015.

According to the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture, public investment in this sector will mainly go to rehabilitating and maintaining the irrigation and drainage systems.

The ministry said that 3.5 billion lek (28 million dollars) of the budget will be used to subsidize farmers.

The government will increase funds for projects, which aim to reduce and avoid the flooding of agricultural areas, to 4.3 billion lek (34.4 million dollars), 70 percent more than the figure in 2015.

At the beginning of 2015, thousands of hectares of agricultural lands in southern Albania were flooded. Endi
