Mas fails in attempt to form Catalan regional gov't

Artur Mas, leader of the Junt pel Si (Together for Yes) pro-independence movement in Catalonia, Spain, continues to fail in his attempt to form a regional government, media reported Wednesday.
His party won the regional elections on Sept. 27 with 62 seats in the 135 Catalan Assembly (Generalitat). But in order to form a government, Mas needs the support of the left-wing pro-independence party CUP, that won 10 seats.
CUP on Tuesday said it would decide on Dec. 27 whether or not it would support Mas as leader of the Generalitat.
So far, CUP has said they are willing to support Junts pel Si but not Mas, given his austerity policies and alleged links of his former party to corruption scandals in the region.
Catalonia has gone for three months with no effective regional government, which Mas presented as a plebiscite for Catalan independence -- a move condemned by Madrid.
If CUP and Junts pel Si fail to reach agreement before Jan. 9, new elections will be held, the fourth since 2010. Endit
