Tokyo stocks close mixed as cagey investors await upcoming global economic policy

Tokyo stocks closed mixed Wednesday as a circumspect mood saw market players maneuver cautiously ahead of upcoming global economic news and data, including the keenly-awaited results of the European Central Bank's policy meeting.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended the day down 74.27 points, or 0.37 percent, from Tuesday at 19,938.13, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange edged up 0.31 point, or 0.02 percent higher to finish at 1,602.26.

The day's notable decliners comprised glass and ceramics and pulp and paper-linked shares, whereas gainers were led by construction and communication and information-linked issues.

The day's turnover was 2,305.7 billion yen (18.73 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
