UN Security Council condemns attacks on UN mission base in DR Congo

UN Security Council on Monday condemned Sunday's attacks on a base of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, MONUSCO, by Ugandan rebels.

These attacks by the Allied Defense Forces (ADF) in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, led to the killings of one peacekeeper, who was a national of Malawi, four soldiers of Congolese Armed Forces and several civilians, and the injuries of several others, including one peacekeeper, according to a press statement of the council issued Monday.

The council expressed their condolences to the family of the peacekeeper killed, to the government of Malawi and to MONUSCO, as well as to the government of the DR Congo.

The council condemned "in the strongest terms the repeated attacks perpetrated against civilians by the ADF in North Kivu, which have already resulted in more than 500 civilians killed since October 2014," said the statement.

The 15-member body further stressed "the utmost importance of neutralizing, once and for all, all armed groups in the DRC and called for the urgent resumption of operations against these groups."

The ADF, a partly Islamist group of Ugandan origin that came into existence in the 1990s, has continued to commit atrocities and human rights abuses that include killings of civilians, rape, abductions and looting in the DR Congo despite the Congolese military's efforts to hunt down its members.
