Kabore leads in Burkina Faso presidential election

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Roch Marc Christian Kabore, candidate of People's Movement for Progress (MPP) has kept the lead in the ongoing presidential elections in Burkina Faso.

Provisional results from 177 communities out of 368 communities in Burkina Faso showed Kabore grasped 54.42 percent of votes, against 29.49 percent for his challenger Zephirin Diabre, the National independent electoral commission on Monday disclosed on its website.

Over 5.5 million Burkinabes, among them 2.6 million women, were expected to cast their votes in 17,898 polling stations nationwide to choose a new president and 127 members of parliament.

The presidential election occurs following President Blaise Compaore's resignation in October 2014 amid popular insurrection against his attempt to stand for a new term after 27 years on power.

The general elections should put an end to a one-year transition regime, restore democratic order and provide the West African country with new legitimate authorities. Enditem
