Mexican basketball suspended by FIBA

Xinhua, November 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Mexican basketball federation has been suspended by world governing body FIBA because of the national government's interference in how the sport is run.

The decision casts into doubt Mexico's participation at next year's Olympic Games, despite the central American nation having secured a place at July's World Olympic qualifying tournament after they reached the semifinals of September's FIBA Americas Championships in Mexico City.

That stems from a conflict between the government and several national sport federations, which are facing an inspection by a government agency to see how money is spent.

The International Olympic Committee opposes political interference in national sports bodies and recently suspended Kuwait from the Olympics.

The Mexico issue will be reviewed by the IOC executive board in meetings Dec. 8-10 in Lausanne, Switzerland.  Endi
