Austrian, British leaders vow to jointly combat terrorism, refugee problem

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann and visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday called for joint European efforts to tackle anti-terrorism and migration issues.

"The closer the European cooperation (becomes), the more likely we are able to curb terrorism," Faymann said here when meeting with Cameron at the Austrian federal chancellery, according to a press release from the chancellery.

"No country can find a solution to the migration issue alone, but rather we need solidarity in handling this in Europe," Faymann said.

A gap often exists between decisions made by the European Union and their subsequent implementation. Closer cooperation is needed to bridge this gap on issues including repatriation agreements, the establishment of necessary hot spots and securing the EU borders, he added.

For his part, Cameron called for a "stronger external EU border to protect our security with more effective screening and greater sharing of data between member states."

Cameron said both sides agreed on the need for a "comprehensive approach which tackles the (refugee) problem at source and stops migrants from making the perilous journey to Europe." Endi
