Interview: Mozambican minister praises technology cooperation with China

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mozambican minister of Science and Technology Jorge Nhambiu has hailed Mozambique-China cooperation in the technology sector as "quite advanced" amid enhanced two-way cooperation.

Nhambiu told Xinhua in an exclusive interview on Wednesday that, currently, the ministry is mainly cooperating with two Chinese companies, namely Huawei and ZTE, on technical matters.

"To name a specific example, Huawei is helping build the first data center in Mozambique, which is now in its final stage," said Nhambiu.

The National Data Center, located in the premises of the Science and Technology Park in Manhica district of Maputo Province, is considered by the Mozambican government as an important milestone in the implementation of e-Government strategy.

The center, thanks to the loans provided by the Export-Import Bank of China (EximBank), will enable the southern African country to have a data center which has 800 terabytes of physical space, added Nhambiu.

"There are data centers that some companies have, but not one with such dimensions as the National Data Center," Nhambiu told Xinhua.

According to Nhambiu, the center is within the context of the e-Government strategy approved by the government in 2006, being considered as a catalyst of public sector reform since its target group is mainly the public sector.

When Alberto Vaquina, the former Prime Minister, launched the construction ceremony for the data center in December, 2013, he made it clear that this important step would allow the country to have a technology platform for file and data management and services in electronic form from all state institutions.

Moreover, Nhambiu continued, the data center has a dual function with the rest ability to serve commercial purposes.

For Nhambiu, Mozambique and China have many opportunities for cooperation in area of information and communication technologies, and he is really looking forward to seeing more investment, especially in the training of professional technicians. Endit
