Two underage young men have been detained by police for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Kempele, northwest Finland, media reported on Tuesday.
According to the police, the two boys sexually harassed the teenage girl, and at least one of them raped the girl.
The incident took place around 10.30 pm on Monday. Two local men who happened to pass by the scene called the police for help.
The police were unwilling to disclose the nationality of the alleged rapists, but commercial TV channel MTV3 reported that they were refugees from Afghanistan.
Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila, whose hometown is in the municipality of Kempele, made a strong condemnation of the incident.
Sipila convened a meeting of key ministers on the issue. He said that legislation is being prepared that would make a fast deportation possible, if a foreigner has committed a serious crime.
The prime minister said the fact that the alleged rape took place in his home municipality does not change his plan to make his home there available for accommodating refugees.
National broadcaster Yle reported on Tuesday that several police representatives have expressed concern with increased harassments of women, but they only commented on the condition of anonymity as the subject is sensitive.
The police blamed cultural differences as the talk and behaviour of Finnish women is misinterpreted.
In the capital city of Helsinki, another case is coming to court involving an alleged rape by an Iraqi asylum seeker. Endit
