A Russian warship passed the Dardanelles Strait in northwestern Turkey and headed toward the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, just about half an hour after a Russian warplane was downed by the Turkish military, local media reported.
The "Yamal" Russian warship entered the strait 36 minutes after Turkish jets shot down a Russian SU-24 over alleged airspace violation, the Dogan News Agency reported.
It said the warship had completed its passage of the 36-mile-long strait and headed toward the Mediterranean Sea.
"Yamal" was designed for landing operations and transportation of military personnel and cargo and has been in service since 1988. It is able to carry up to 250 troops and 10 tanks.
