1st LD Writethru: NATO to hold extraordinary meeting over Russian jet downing by Turkey

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

NATO will hold an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday after a Russian fighter jet was shot down by Turkey, NATO resources said.

NATO ambassadors will meet under the North Atlantic Council, the political decision body of NATO at the request of Turkey, which is a NATO member state since 1952.

The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday confirmed that a Su-24 warplane crashed in Syria.

"A Russian Su-24 located at the altitude of 6,000 meters in Syrian airspace crashed allegedly because of gunfire from the ground," Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed Defense Ministry official as saying.

"During all of the flight the plane was over the territory of Syria. This has been recorded by objective means of control," the official said. Endit
