1st LD Writethru: Five more arrests made in Belgium linked with Paris attacks: prosecutor

Xinhua, November 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Five more people were arrested on Monday morning as part of the ongoing investigation into the Paris terror attacks, Belgium's federal prosecutor announced in a statement.

Raids and house searches were carried out at five properties in Brussels and a further two in the southeastern Belgian city of Liege, the prosecutor said.

The five arrests on Monday bring to 21 the number of people detained by police since major police operation which saw raids take place in several districts of Brussels and Charleroi on Sunday evening.

The federal prosecutor said a sum of 26,000 euros (about 27,560 U.S. dollars) in cash was seized during one of Monday's searches.

The latest statement also denied reports circulating on Sunday night which claimed Paris terror attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam might have fled the Liege region for Germany.

The prosecutor said a BMW car was pulled over by police for a routine check and sped off, however the vehicle was identified and there is no link to the ongoing terror investigation. Endit
