ASEAN supports to settle disputes of South China Sea in line with int'l law, DOC : Cambodian senior official

A senior Cambodian government official has said that the ASEAN leaders supported to settle South China Sea disputes peacefully in accordance with the international law and Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).

"On the issue of South China Sea, the leaders of ASEAN countries collectively agreed all countries undertake to uphold the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea in accordance with international law," Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, said in a press conference on Sunday night when Hun Sen returned from attending the 27th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Malaysia.

"More importantly, ASEAN and China signed the DOC in 2002, so all parties involved in the dispute should fully implement it," he said.

His comments came after Chinese Premier Li Keqiang raised a five-pronged proposal during the 10th East Asia Summit in Malaysia to uphold and promote peace and stability in the South China Sea, urging countries outside the region to refrain from taking actions that may cause tension in the region.
