Local police arrested one Syrian woman and two Pakistani men in southern Honduras, near the border with Nicaragua, on Saturday, presumably on their way to the United States illegally, according to local authorities.
The three were caught at a highway checkpoint while travelling on a public bus in the Central American country's southern Choluteca municipality, Deputy Police Commissioner Ruiz Martinez told local daily La Prensa.
The immigrants entered Honduras from Nicaragua via land but did not go through any official border crossing, added the deputy commissioner.
The three have been sent to the Migration offices and a team of police officers from the country's capital city have been sent to the region to continue the investigation, said Ruiz Martinez.
Earlier this week, five Syrians were arrested in the Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa. The men were on their way to the U.S. using stolen Greek passports, according to police records.
The Syrians have been identified as four college students and an engineer.
Officials said the men have no prior criminal record and ruled out the possibility that they belong to a terrorist group. Enditem
