India invites French president as chief guest on Republic Day

Xinhua, November 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

India has invited French President Francois Hollande to be the chief guest on its Republic Day in January next year, sources said on Saturday.

"The French President has accepted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to be the chief guest at the 67th Republic Day parade," the sources said.

The acceptance of invitation, which came on the heels of Paris attacks, is being seen not only as a major diplomatic victory for India but also shows India's strong stance against terrorism.

U.S. President Barack Obama was the chief guest at India's 66th Republic Day parade in the capital held on Jan. 26.
